The Investigative Unit of the Township of Washington Police is currently staffed by two Officers. The responsibilities of this unit include the investigation of any and all criminal matters within the Township. In addition to this, Crime Scene investigation, collection of evidence including photography, fingerprinting, and coordinating the assistance of outside agencies are some of the tasks. Background investigation of Township employees, volunteers, and permit applicants are conducted. Juvenile matters and drug offenses are also investigated by this unit, as are internal affair matters. Coordination of information with outside agencies is one of the strongest tools used in law enforcement today. This is handled on a daily basis by the investigative unit. In service training, some mandated by the State Attorney General, including firearms training with biannual qualifications, domestic violence and other subjects are also a responsibility of this unit. Recently, this unit participated in a multi-jurisdiction joint task force investigating a rash of residential burglaries that had occurred throughout Bergen County. The result of this detail was the arrest of the prime suspect, his incarceration and the recovery of property taken during these burglaries.
