The Township of Washington Police Department is proud to announce the implementation of The Blue Envelope Program!

The Blue Envelope Program represents a collaborative effort aimed at fostering a safer and more understanding environment for drivers with autism spectrum disorder during traffic related encounters.  These traffic encounters can range from a Traffic Stop to a Traffic Crash.  If a driver with Autism happens to be pulled over by a Police Officer or is involved in a Traffic Crash, the driver should present the Blue Envelope to the Officer (which can be seen below).

This specially designed envelope holds a driver’s essential documents:

  • Driver’s License
  • Registration
  • Insurance Card
  • Emergency Contact Card (which is provided with the envelope)

The envelope contains guidance on the motorist’s communication limitations.  Its significance goes beyond just a storage solution, as the outside of the Blue Envelope contains instructions for the driver and the reverse side of the Blue Envelope contains instructions for the Police Officer.

This initiative addresses several key objectives:

  • Enhancing Understanding: By providing officers with immediate, accessible information about autism, the Blue Envelope aims to promote empathy and patience, leading to more positive interactions.
  • Reducing Anxiety: Traffic stops can be particularly stressful for individuals with autism. The Blue Envelope serves as a visual cue that helps officers adjust their communication style, thereby reducing anxiety for the driver.
  • Streamlining Communication: The guidelines on the envelope offer practical tips for officers, making it easier for them to communicate effectively with individuals with autism, even in high-stress situations like traffic stops.
  • Encouraging Preparedness: For individuals with autism and their families, the Blue Envelope is a tool that encourages preparedness. By keeping their important documents in the envelope and understanding how to present it during a stop, drivers can feel more confident and secure.

These Blue Envelopes were donated to the Township of Washington Police Department by the Bergen County Traffic Officers Association!

If you or someone you know would like to participate in the Blue Envelope Program, please stop by the Township Police Department and pick up an envelope, which can be found in our lobby.
