With a heavy heart, The Township of Washington regretfully announces the passing of retired Sgt. Thomas Lawton on Wednesday August 7, 2024.
Tom Lawton started with the Township of Washington Police Department as a Special Officer in July of 1982. Special Officer Lawton would work for the Department in this capacity until April of 1988 where he was hired by the New Jersey Transit Police Department and attended the City of Paterson Police Academy. Following his completion of the Basic Police Officers training course, Officer Lawton returned to the Township of Washington Police Department in August of 1988 where he would work as a full time Police Officer in the Patrol Division. Officer Lawton was promoted to Corporal in July of 2000 where he continued to work in patrol. In May of 2014, Corporal Lawton was promoted to the Rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Lawton would continue to work in patrol, in charge of a squad until his retirement in July of 2019.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tom’s family and friends. His contributions to the Township Of Washington community will always be remembered.
