The Township of Washington Police Department has received a few calls recently regarding coyote sightings in the area. The most recent sighting was in the area of Clark Field. Coyotes can be found in any open space, parks or neighborhood. Most times, coyotes will go out of their way to avoid humans. Coyotes in general have become more comfortable around people because food sources can be found on their properties. They will take advantage of eating whatever food they can find.
The following are some Coyote Safety suggestions…..
- Do not approach a coyote. Stay away from them. Keep a Safe Distance
- Never leave small children and small pets outside and unsupervised.
- Protect your pets by vaccinating them against rabies.
- Frighten Coyotes by making loud noises
- Keep garbage in a tightly sealed container
- Use yard lights or motion detectors to frighten them away
- Don’t run away or turn your back on a coyote.
- Do not allow a coyote to get in between you and your pet or you and your child…. keep children close to you.
- Never feed coyotes or wildlife. Feeding endangers your family and neighbors as it lures coyotes into neighborhoods.
- Remove sources of water, especially in dry climates.
