As the Memorial Day weekend begins, The Washington Township Police Department wants to remind everyone that impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious motor vehicle crashes and fatalities.
In less than a 24-hour period, The Washington Township Police Department arrested three individuals for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) offenses in three separate incidents. One of the arrests occurred within a designated school zone, resulting in enhanced charges under New Jersey motor vehicle laws.  These arrests demonstrate the department’s proactive efforts to keep impaired drivers off Township roadways.  Planning ahead can prevent a tragic crash, arrest, or injury.
The Washington Township Police Department encourages residents to use one of these safe alternatives if they have been drinking or using impairing substances:
  • Use a rideshare service
  • Choose a designated driver before going out
  • Call a trusted friend or family member for a ride home
  • Use public transportation when available
  • Stay overnight if you are unable to drive safely
  • Keep local taxi numbers saved in your phone before heading out
  • Do not let friends drive impaired — take their keys and help arrange transportation
Charges are accusations, and all individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
