The Township of Washington Police Department would like to remind all residents to lock their vehicles and to take their keys and/or key fobs with them. Please remove all valuables from your vehicle or hide them so they are not in view. In the last few incidents reported around Bergen County, thieves are only entering unlocked vehicles. However, burglars are known to forcefully gain entry into a vehicle if they see a valuable in view. Recently, thieves are stealing motor vehicles because the keys and/or key fobs are left inside.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, stolen vehicles have significantly dropped in recent years yet thefts nationally of new cars and trucks have jumped by 34 percent in the past year.
